Key Updates and Announcements

It has been several weeks since I’ve been able to post an update, and there has been plenty of Microsoft 365 updates.

  • OAuth support for POP, IMAP, and SMTP AUTH is now available for all tenants. This means organisation can continue to use these protocols with modern authentication instead of legacy basic authentication.
  • Call Quality Dashboard V2 is to be retired, start using the advanced CQD at cqd.teams.microsoft.com for improve reporting and additional development
  • If you are administering OneDrive for Business then you should being using httpS://admin.onedrive.complete
  • Microsoft Teams has several upcoming updates to be aware of, soon meeting organisers will be able to force meeting participants to wait in the lobby, chat and meetings will allow for up to 350 participants', and team membership will allow for up to 10,000 members

Updated Feature: OneDrive Sync Enterprise ring is getting a new name

This message is for admins who manage the new OneDrive sync app for Windows (OneDrive.exe) and have chosen to receive updates in the enterprise ring. We’re updating the name of OneDrive Sync “Enterprise” ring to “Deferred” ring.

When will this happen?

We will roll out this cname change to the Deferred ring in late June.


Cortana in Windows 10, version 2004 and the Bing Answers feature for Enterprise users

Cortana in Windows 10, version 2004 and later, helps users quickly get information across Microsoft 365, using typed or spoken queries to connect with people, check calendars, set reminders, and more. For more information on the supported features, visit the Windows experience blog.

Also available within the Cortana application are Bing Answers that provides fast, authoritative results to search queries. Bing Answers allow users to ask Cortana web-related questions in the Cortana in Windows app, such as “What’s the current weather?” or “Who is the president of the U.S.?,” and get a response, based on public results from Bing.com.

We are providing controls for admins to enable or disable each feature as appropriate for their organization. Details on how to configure each feature are below.

The new Cortana in Windows 10 experience will be available when we release version 2004 of Windows 10 to the public.

Outlook on the web - In-product notification of full inbox

General availability of automatic classification with sensitivity labels in Microsoft 365 services

New Teams meeting setting - require meeting participants to use the lobby

Updated May 27, 2020: To ensure the proper experience we are adjusting the roll-out plan. The rollout for Outlook for the web has been extended. The rollout for Outlook for Mac will begin soon. We will communicate via Message center when we move forward with Outlook for Windows. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Your end users will no longer need to download the Quick Poll add-in from the store and manually install it in Outlook to create a poll after we pre-install the Poll add-in.

  • The rollout for Outlook on the web (desktop) began the end of May (was late April) and will be completed by mid-June (was end of May).
  • The rollout for Outlook for Mac will begin in early June and be completed by the end of June.
  • We will communicate with you again when we have an estimated timeline for Outlook for Windows.

Feature Update: Teams meeting call and meeting chat size to increase to 350

Office 365 Groups will become Microsoft 365 Groups

The Office 365 Groups platform enables collaboration across Microsoft 365. Acknowledging that scope, Office 365 Groups are becoming Microsoft 365 Groups. These changes will happen over time and will be reflected in all the connected endpoints over the upcoming quarters.

  • We’ll begin changing the appropriate UI strings for different Groups endpoints starting in end of June 2020.

Manage which accounts can log in to Teams via enrolled mobile devices

Updated Feature: Microsoft Stream cloud recordings regional storage control

Meeting recordings are stored in Microsoft Stream cloud storage. Tenant admins have an option to go the Microsoft Teams admin center to turn ON/OFF “Allow cloud recording” setting for Teams meetings. The recording feature is currently disabled for customers whose Teams data is stored in-country if Microsoft Stream is not available in country. We will be adding an additional setting which will allow customers to use recording if Microsoft Stream data residency is not yet in country.

We will begin rolling this change at the end of June and expect to be complete mid-July.

Note: This change applies to Teams meeting and call recordings. There is a plan for implementing a similar change for Teams live events, and we will communicate via Message center when available.


Updates Available for Microsoft 365 Apps on Monthly Channel (soon to be called Current Channel)

Screen recording available in Microsoft Stream

A feature for screen recording is now available in Microsoft Stream. Video creators can use options to record any window or screen, add mic or system audio, and include webcam video. There is no need to download any new software, the tool is web based and works with latest version of Edge or Chrome.

  • The video search experience in Stream will temporarily exclude results from transcripts for these data centers: Europe North, Europe West, Singapore, South East Asia, U.S. East. Searches will continue to show results based on words in the video title and description. Option to create all meetings online for Outlook on the web and Outlook mobile

Outlook on the web users will soon be able to configure Outlook to setup all their meetings as “online meetings” when they use Skype or Teams as their online meeting provider.

  • We will begin rolling out Outlook on the web the end of May.
  • We will begin rolling out Outlook mobile the first of June.
  • The rollout will be complete by end of July.

PowerShell scripts are currently available which allow you to enable this for all users. Should you enable it now, when the user-level feature is deployed to your tenant your users will have online meetings set-up as default for all their meetings.

SharePoint default site theme changing from blue to teal

Soon, SharePoint will automatically update new and existing communication sites and team sites with new teal theme. Group connected team sites, and sites that have been customized, will not be impacted.

The new teal theme can be changed to the former blue theme at any time in the Change the look panel.

New Feature: Self service purchase user request workflow

In January we launched the self-service purchase feature that allowed users in a tenant to purchase Power platform products directly from Microsoft. This feature came with the ability for admins to turn off self-service purchase of individual products via Power Shell. Starting in July, we’re introducing the ability for a user who is blocked from purchasing a self-service purchase product to make a request that will be added to a queue in admin center. IT admins can then assign a requested license to the user from existing license or purchase new licenses to fulfill the request.

When this will happen

  • We will begin gradual roll-out of this feature in mid-June.
  • We anticipate the roll-out will be complete by the end of July.
